Victoria (Alexandrina Victoria; 24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901) was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until her death. She adopted the additional title of Empress of India on 1 May 1876. Known as the Victorian era, her reign of 63 years and seven months was longer than that of any of her predecessors. It was a period of industrial, cultural, political, scientific, and military change within the United Kingdom, and was marked by a great expansion of the British Empire. Victoria was the daughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn (the fourth son of King George III), and Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. After both the Duke and his father died in 1820, she was raised under close supervision by her mother and her comptroller, John Conroy. She inherited the throne aged 18 after her father's three elder brothers died without surviving legitimate issue. Though a constitutional monarch, privately, Victoria attempted to influence government policy and ministerial appointments; publicly, she became a national icon who was identified with strict standards of personal morality.

  • Monetized And Guaranteed By The British Government.
  • The Queen Of British Empire Was The Most Powerful Monarch and Woman In History
  • Struck between 1887 and 1892, the Victoria ½ Crown featuring the second portrait — also known as the "Jubilee Head" — marks an important transitional period in British numismatics and imperial history. Issued during the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria's reign, the coin introduced a new effigy of the monarch that captured her mature features, veiled and crowned, symbolizing both longevity and sovereign dignity.
  • The obverse design was sculpted by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm, whose portrait of Victoria deviated from youthful earlier depictions. The veiled diadem emphasized the Queen's evolving public image as matriarch of a vast empire. Surrounding the bust is the Latin legend “VICTORIA DEI GRATIA,” meaning “Victoria by the Grace of God,” a traditional invocation of divine right and legitimacy.
  • The reverse, crafted by Leonard Charles Wyon, features an ornate quartered shield of the Royal Arms encircled by the Order of the Garter and the collar of the Order of the Bath. The phrase “HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE,” meaning “Shame on he who thinks evil of it,” is the historic motto of the Order, reinforcing Britain’s heraldic and monarchical legacy. Beneath the shield, the iconic scene of St George slaying the dragon embodies themes of valor and protection.
  • The coin was minted at the Royal Mint on Tower Hill in London, using sterling silver (.925 fine) and struck with a reeded edge and medal alignment. Measuring 32 mm and weighing 14.14 grams, it held both practical and ceremonial significance in late Victorian Britain. Its detailed artistry and historical symbolism make it a standout example of Victorian silver coinage during a period of industrial, colonial, and cultural transformation.
